The Israel Internet Association (ISOC-IL) has issued an urgent warning about a large-scale phishing scam spreading via WhatsApp. The warning, published in Hebrew, Arabic, and English, has been widely reported by Israeli news and tech outlets.
For years, ISOC-IL’s Internet Safety Hotline has served as a trusted emergency resource for Israelis facing online threats. In recent days, the hotline has received dozens of reports about deceptive WhatsApp messages targeting Facebook account holders. These fraudulent messages falsely claim the recipient has violated Facebook’s community guidelines and must click a link to restore their account. In reality, the links lead to fake websites designed to steal login credentials and gain access to linked credit card details.
According to Yonatan Ben-Horin, Manager of ISOC-IL’s Internet Safety Hotline, many of these scam messages originate from phone numbers with Finnish and Vietnamese country codes, though some come from Israeli or U.S. numbers, making them appear more legitimate.
To help the public identify and avoid these scams, ISOC-IL has released screenshots of the fraudulent messages, including the phone numbers they were sent from. ISOC-IL urges users to never click on unverified links or provide personal information in response to unsolicited messages.
