Internet Society Nigeria Chapter: Q1 Newsletter (January – March 2026)

Introduction

The first quarter of 2026 marked a period of focused, high-impact engagement for the Internet Society Nigeria Chapter. Through three major programs and strategic advocacy, the Chapter demonstrated its commitment to building a safe, inclusive, and trusted internet ecosystem across Nigeria. These initiatives reached diverse audiences, including students, women, educators, and policymakers, reinforcing the importance of digital responsibility in today’s connected world.

Data Privacy Day 2026

28 January 2026 The Internet Society Nigeria Chapter commemorated Data Privacy Day 2026 under the theme: “You have the power to take charge of your data.” The session was hosted by Engr. Kunle Olorundare, with Priscillia Igba and Nkoro E. Nkoro serving as moderators.

Expanded Engagement The event brought together stakeholders from across the digital ecosystem, including policy advocates, cybersecurity professionals, and everyday internet users. Panelists Oche Paul, Chibugo Illoh, and Paul Ingiona Adie delivered practical and relatable insights.

Deep Dive Discussions

· The growing risks of data breaches and identity theft in Nigeria.

· How individuals unknowingly expose personal data online.

· The importance of data protection laws and compliance.

· Practical tools for securing personal information (password managers, 2FA, and privacy settings).

Impact & Outcome Participants left with a stronger understanding of their digital rights and responsibilities, as well as actionable steps to protect their online identities. The program reinforced ISOC NG’s leadership in promoting digital trust and privacy awareness nationwide.

Advocacy: Multistakeholder Participation in the UN Cybercrime Convention (Rule 17)

During January, the Chapter actively followed global discussions on the United Nations Cybercrime Convention, particularly negotiations around Rule 17 in Vienna.

Expanded Advocacy Role ISOC NG amplified awareness among its members and networks regarding the importance of inclusive internet governance frameworks. The Chapter emphasized that excluding key stakeholders—especially those from developing regions—could weaken the effectiveness of the Convention.
