Election Rules and Timetable for the 2025 Internet Society Uganda Chapter Officials

The Internet Society Uganda Chapter’s Election Committee is mandated to conduct the election of Chapter Officers to run the Chapters operations for the next two years.  This document provides guidelines and procedures for the conduct of the elections.

These rules cover eligibility, procedures, and dispute resolution for the elections.

The following positions are up for election:

  • President / Chair
  • Vice President / Vice Chair
  • Secretary-General
  • Finance Officer / Treasurer
  • Secretary General – Special Interests Group (SIG)
  • Projects Coordinator

Eligibility
Voting

In order to vote in these elections, a person must be a registered individual member of the Internet Society Uganda Chapter.

Nominees; 

Persons/nominees for any of the positions mentioned above MUST meet the following:Be 18 years and above

  • Be a registered individual member of the Internet Society Uganda Chapter for at least two (02) years and has either paid dues in the last 2 years or taken part in the Chapter’s activities
  • NOT served in the same position within the Board for more than two (2) consecutive years.
  • Candidates for all positions are expected to have at least five (5) years proven/ verifiable professional experience in an area relevant to ISOC activities.
  • All candidates are expected to present evidence of their involvement in some other volunteer roles;
  • Be available and committed to participate in ISOC Executive and general meetings (both local and global) and all other ISOC activities (face-to-face and online).
  • Has NOT been convicted with corruption related case or other misconduct
  • Has NOT been adjudged to have been of unsound mind
  • Has NOT is an undischarged bankrupt;

Procedure

  • Elections will be conducted online
  • The Election Committee will announce an election date 
  • The Election Committee will send out call for members to express their interest in standing for election in a position (based on the descriptions of each position in the bylaws)
  • The Committee will publish a list of validly nominated candidates at the close of nomination period.
  • Candidates whose names appear in the final EC’s slate may commence campaign after the slate has been published.
  • A designated election committee member will configure the Online Voting Tool according to the list of open positions and approved candidates as deemed fit by the Election Committee.
  • You are eligible to vote if you are a member of ISOC-Ug Chapter by June 15, 2025.
  • An invitation to vote will be sent out to all members by the designated EC member in the Internet Society Chapter Portal (AMS) ahead of the election date.
  • A reminder to vote will be sent out after 4 days ahead of the last election date.
  • A last reminder to vote will be sent out 1 day ahead of the last election date.
  • The online voting will automatically close at 00:00hrs EAT on July 15,2025. 
  • The Election Committee will verify the tally and publish the election results within two days of the close of voting.
  • The winners will be declared based on simple majority, provisions may be made for runoff should there be ties.
  • The elected officials will be formally presented to members during the Internet Society Uganda Chapter’s Annual General Meeting. Exact date and venue to be communicated to the members.

Dispute resolution

  • Members may register any complaint with the Election Committee at any time in the process by sending an email to info@isoc.ug
  • If any member believes that a standing candidate or voter is not eligible according to the rules set out or in the course of the election process has violated the Internet Society Code of Conduct, they may present an appeal to the Election Committee within 48 hours from the time of release of the final slate. The Election Committee may share such appeals with the community. The Election Committee has final discretion over the consideration of such appeals, including dismissal, and has the authority to disqualify a voter or candidate.
  • The Committee will rely on Internet Society Principles to resolve disputes.

Report

The Election Committee will prepare a report to be formally presented to members and the Executive Committee on completion of its mandate.
