Tech Report: In the Wake of Hamas Attacks from Gaza, Terrorist Organizations Utilize Online Platforms for Widespread Dissemination of Disinformation, Incitement and Anti-Semitic Propaganda

Tech Against Terrorism is a United Nations-backed international initiative that was founded in April 2017, with a global mission to combat terrorist and violent extremist activity online. This independent body works by understanding online threats through detailed analysis, disrupting terrorist activities in coordination with different sectors, and reinforcing effective counterterrorism responses. Their key initiative, the Terrorist Content Analytics Platform (TCAP), utilizes open-source intelligence and AI to identify, verify, and facilitate the removal of terrorist content across tech platforms, while also providing crucial data for academia and civil society research. Upholding human rights and freedom of expression, Tech Against Terrorism remains dedicated to fostering strong collaborations between technology sectors, governments, and stakeholders.

Following the terrorist attacks in Israel and the ensuing violence since Saturday 7 October 2023, Tech Against Terrorism recently published a preliminary report, identifying known terror organizations – Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades (IQB) – as prime sources responsible for spreading footage from the attackers, incitement to violence, victim videos, propaganda from a range of violent extremists, conspiracy theories, and misinformation. The report cautions that “the terrorist attacks in Israel and the subsequent online reaction will serve as a litmus test for all of us.”
