Samen met voorzitter Alexander Blom is Ruben Brave, tevens oprichter van annotatietool Make Media Great Again (MMGA) het proces aan het doorlopen om een Special Interest Group (SIG) te starten rondom de thema’s fake news, misinformation, en kwaliteitscontrole van de media in het algemeen.
Het doel van het initiatief is het verspreiden van de kennis over en het gebruik van de W3C Web Annotation Standards die mede zijn ontwikkeld door ISOC zelf. Door internationale samenwerking moet het leiden tot de creatie van tools, methodes en principes om desinformatie te bestrijden en de kwaliteit van digitale content te verbeteren. Kern van de zaak is ook zeker om dit voor álle internetgebruikers te doen en zo de inclusiviteit van een veilig en geloofwaardig internet te verhogen: niet iedere internetgebruiker is even scherp op de valkuilen van fake news.
Een aantal concrete actiepunten is al vastgelegd, zoals het organiseren van een webinar en het oprichten van een Global (mis)Information Observatory (GIO). Voorlopig vormt dit initiatief een werkgroup binnen ISOC NL, de officiële oprichting van de SIG volgt nog. Ondertussen werken Ruben Brave en Alexander Blom aan een stevige fundering voor dit cruciale en spannende initiatief. To be continued!

Founding of Media Special Interest Group on the initiative of ISOC NL
Initiative of board member Ruben Brave to start a Special Interest Group within The Internet Society
Together with chairman Alexander Blom, Ruben Brave, also founder of annotation tool Make Media Great Again (MMGA), is goingthrough the process of starting a Special Interest Group (SIG) around the themes of fake news, misinformation, and quality control of the media in general.
The aim of the initiative is to disseminate knowledge about and use of the W3C Web Annotation Standards that have been co-developed by ISOC itself. Through international cooperation it should lead to the creation of tools, methods and principles to combat disinformation and improve the quality of digital content. The core of the matter is also to do this for all internet users and thus increase the inclusiveness of a safe and trustworthy internet: not every internet user is equally aware of the pitfalls of fake news.
A number of concrete action points has already been defined, such as organising a webinar and setting up a Global (mis)Information Observatory (GIO). For the time being the project still forms a working group within ISOC NL, the official founding of the SIG will follow. Meanwhile, Ruben Brave and Alexander Blom are working on a solid foundation for this crucial and exciting initiative. To be continued!
